ABSTRACT:
Nyctanthes arbor-tristis Linn., commonly known as Parijat or Night Jasmine, is a well-known medicinal plant in traditional systems of medicine such as Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani. This review aims to comprehensively explore and critically evaluate its therapeutic potential based on contemporary scientific evidence. Each part of the plantleaves, flowers, seeds, and barkhas been traditionally used to treat a range of conditions including fever, arthritis, diabetes, liver disorders, and infections. The review begins by discussing the ethnomedical relevance and botanical characteristics of the plant, followed by a detailed account of its phytochemical composition. Major bioactive compounds include iridoid glycosides (such as arbortristosides), flavonoids, alkaloids, phenolic acids, and essential oils. The pharmacological section covers a wide spectrum of activities: anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, hepatoprotective, immunomodulatory, antidiabetic, and antimicrobial. These effects are supported by in vitro and in vivo models demonstrating significant modulation of inflammatory markers (TNF-a, IL-6, COX-2), oxidative stress, liver enzymes, and immune response. Additionally, the review addresses the toxicological profile and mechanisms of action underlying these bioactivities. It also identifies key research gaps such as the need for standardized formulations, long-term safety assessments, and clinical trials. The paper concludes by highlighting the potential of N. arbor-tristis as a promising candidate for future herbal drug development, supporting its integration into modern pharmacotherapy.
