ABSTRACT:
Although definitely milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is not a newcomer in terms of being hepatoprotective, the anti-inflammatory effect of its major bioactive constituent, silymarin, has recently found interest as an ingredient in fields of dermatology. This is a case study review of the design and testing of silymarin-impregnated transdermal patches with specific anti-inflammatory properties on the skin. Transdermal delivery is characterized by reduced adverse effects in the system, enhanced absorption, and controlled release of the drug. Many formulation methods, polymers, and permeation enhancers are investigated in order to optimise patch efficiency. In vitro and in vivo analyses of silymarin patches have provided encouraging evidence on their anti-inflammatory properties in the localized inflammation, thus, they may serve as a promising alternative topical intervention in the treatment of inflammatory skin diseases. The current review is based on the formulation issues, effects of milk thistle in the treatment, and potential applications of milk thistle in dermatology.
