ABSTRACT:
The resurgence of monkeypox, a once-rare zoonotic disease, has sparked global concern as it spreads beyond its traditional confines in Central and West Africa. With a history of sporadic outbreaks, monkeypox was long considered a localized threat, primarily transmitted from animals to humans in remote areas. However, the recent proliferation of cases in non-endemic regions has highlighted the virus's potential to cause widespread public health crises. This review delves into the intricate details of the monkeypox virus, examining its structure, genetic makeup, and the differences between its two main clades: the Central African and West African variants. The article further explores the clinical manifestations of monkeypox, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and the challenges of distinguishing it from other pox-like illnesses. As the world grapples with the ongoing threat of monkeypox, understanding its modes of transmission, symptoms, and available treatments is crucial for effective management. The article also addresses the broader implications of the outbreak, including its impact on global health systems, economies, and communities. Through a comprehensive analysis, this review aims to provide a detailed understanding of monkeypox and the strategies needed to combat its spread, highlighting the lessons learned from recent outbreaks and the importance of preparedness in preventing future pandemics.
