ABSTRACT:
The flower bud of Syzygium aromaticum (clove) is one of the most important drugs used in indigenous medicine in India, especially in Unani medicine. Syzygium aromaticum is an effective remedy for various ailments, and it is used as anti-gas activity, anticoagulant activity, mucus clearing activity and anesthetic activity. Antimicrobial activity of aqueous, ethanol and acetone extracts of Syzygium aromaticum against two gram negative bacteria Pseudomonas sp. and Proteus vulgaris were investigated by paper disc diffusion method. Phytochemical analysis of aqueous, ethanol and acetone extracts of Syzygium aromaticum revealed the presence of saponins, carbohydrates, glycosides, flavonoids, tannins, lipids, sterols and alkaloids. The present investigation revealed that acetone and ethanol extracts had more potent activity than the aqueous extract.
